In year 2 of the Quality Payment Program (QPP), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a new participation option for solo practitioners and small groups (10 or fewer eligible clinicians) who come together “virtually” to participate in MIPS for a performance period of a year.

Virtual groups - consist of solo practitioners and small practices that combine to report the requirements of MIPS as a collective entity. The participation option in MIPS is available starting in this performance year. Virtual Groups are open for providers and groups of any specialty and locations. Physicians who are interested on the virtual group option may start with virtual groups toolkit. There are four documents in the kit: a virtual group agreement checklist, an agreements template, the election process fact sheet and virtual groups overview.

Requirements for participating as a Virtual Group in MIPS:

 A virtual group exemption criterion:

Participating in Virtual Groups provides for a comprehensive measurement of performance, shared responsibility and ability to coordinate resources to achieve requirements under each performance category.

Participating the virtual group in 2018 must be approved by CMS. Applications are approving due by December 31,2017 for 2018 performance year.
